Adobe Acquires Maxon

Adobe announced today that they are acquiring Maxon, creators of the popular Cinema 4D and Bodypaint 3D software. The acquisition is solely for the purpose of including 3D software in the next installment of their Creative Suite line of products, tentatively titled “Creative Suite 6″.

In a press release, Adobe paints the picture on why this acquisition was meant to be:

“In order to make our Creative Suite line of products come full circle, we needed to add a 3d modeling program to the mix. We had software for video professionals, web developers, graphic designers, photographers and more. We had software that could create amazing 2d graphics, edit video and photos, create entire web sites, but we still didn’t have anything that could do intricate and professional 3d modeling. When we sat down with the idea, it seemed clear that there was only one option. We had to acquire a product that was battle tested and already had a strong following, and that would also seamlessly fit into our current line of products. That product, as it turned out, was Maxon Cinema 4D.”

On the subject of changing the software, Adobe states in the press release, “We plan on keeping the core of the product as is, but we will use our vast knowledge base to improve upon the design and flexibility of the software and interface. The Maxon software is something that a large group of people have come to know and love, and it’s for a good reason. They have designed a smooth flowing product which will fit in perfectly with our current line. The only changes we will make are cosmetic in order to make the software play well with the rest of the Creative Suite line.”

Look for Adobe Cinema 4D in the next release of Adobe’s Creative Suite software.
